IED blast, bomb found in Manipur

Imphal, March 4: Suspected militants exploded a powerful IED near an under-construction government building in Senapati district around 9 last night while police recovered another device from Imphal early this morning.

The police said the first IED exploded near the building proposed for the regional centre of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Makhan village of Senapati district under Saparmeina police station.

Nobody was injured in the explosion and no one claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the other incident, police bomb experts recovered a powerful IED from Yaiskul in Imphal early this morning and safely defused it within two hours.

IRB personnel on patrol duty detected the IED that was fitted to a steel container.

It had been found outside the northern fence of Hijam Yaicham Pat, the graveyard of Bir Tikendrajit Singh, who was hanged by the British for opposing them.

The police stopped traffic in the area for more than an hour. Vehicles were allowed to pass only after the bomb, which weighed around 2kg, was defused, the police said.

The site where the bomb was planted is barely 1km from both the police headquarters and the office-cum-residence of chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

No one claimed responsibility for planting this IED either. The police have not made any arrests in connection with the incidents.
