Under-20 I League kicks off today

Fifteen teams from across the country will vie for top honours in the sixth edition of the Under-20 I League starting on Tuesday, with the steel city hosting the football tourney for the first time.

The league, organised jointly by Tata Steel and Jharkhand Football Association (JFA) under the aegis of All India Football Federation (AIFF), will kick off at JRD Tata Sports Complex and Gopal Maidan.

“We feel proud to host such a prestigious event that brings together budding talents from across the country. The event will be a treat for football lovers of the city and we look forward to some thrilling encounters that bring out the true spirit of soccer,” said Tata Steel vice-president Sanjiv Paul.

The tournament will also mark the maiden appearance of Tata Football Academy. “The AIFF gave us permission to contest after we assured them of forming a football club within a year,” said Paul.

The teams have been divided into three groups. While Pune FC, Prayag United, Sporting Clube De Goa, United Sikkim FC and Salgaocar FC will play in group A, Mumbai FC, Dempo FC, Kingfisher East Bengal, ONGC FC and TFA will be part of group B. Lajong, FC, Churchill Brothers, Air India, Mcdowell Mohun Bagan and Sesa Football Academy are placed in group C.

The league concludes on March 24.
