Ulfa rebel killed in encounter

Jorhat, March 3: An Ulfa rebel was killed in an encounter with security forces at Mudoi village in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam’s Tinsukia district in the wee hours today.

The slain rebel, Dilip Saikia, was among at least five militants who were accosted by security forces while they were crossing the Na-Dihing river near Mudoi tea estate around 5am today.

Army sources said the rebels subsequently opened fire and a 30-minute gun battle ensued. While the rest of the rebels escaped, security personnel later recovered a body, identified as that of Saikia, from the river.

The sources said another rebel had been injured, though he had managed to escape. Security forces are still combing the area to locate the other militants.

An AK-81 rifle, a pistol, two grenades and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site.

Sources said this particular group of militants had come from Myanmar along with Bijoy Das alias Bijoy Chinese and was returning to the neighbouring country after Chinese surrendered a few days back.
