Jamshedpur, March 3: The forest department is getting ready to create fire lines in Dalma to protect the greens from blazes this summer. It will also set up fire squads for prompt action.
The department is waiting for a fund of around Rs 2.5 lakh to start work. A requisition has already been sent to the state forest headquarters.
“We started taking initiative after spring set in last month. We have chalked out a plan on how to go about creating fire lines for saving the forest,” divisional forest officer, Ranchi Wildlife Division, Kamlesh Pandey said.
He elaborated that dry leaves and bushes, collected and placed along the periphery of the forest, acted as fire lines. “If a fire breaks out, it remains confined within the line,” said the DFO.
As for the fire protection squads, three such teams, having 40 members each, will be set up. The members, mainly local villagers, may include even minors and will be paid minimum wages.
Pandey further said though Dalma was spread over 192sqkm, they would concentrate on those parts where elephants habitats are located.
