A group of 50 Dhanbad builders on Sunday raised objections to what they dubbed was an attempt to tarnish their image and called for a high-level probe into the murder of local surgical equipment dealer Saroj Singh.
Singh was gunned down on Thursday evening following a spat with Manaitand-based builder Sanjay Singh.
The protesters, under the aegis of Dhanbad Builders’ Association, said a senior official of the district administration should head the probe committee, whose primary task would be to verify all complaints filed against builders.
Denouncing a statement by the office-bearers of Federation of Dhanbad Zilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry — which blamed the builders for the rising crime rate in Dhanbad — the association members called for the creation of a police commissionerate in Dhanbad.
They also urged the administration to appoint an SSP, an SP (urban) and an SP (rural) like in Ranchi and Jamshedpur for effective policing.
“Majority of the complaints lodged against us for violation of rules are done by parties with vested interests for extorting money,” said vice president of the association Amresh Singh.
Condemning the murder of Saroj Singh, the vice president said the police should carry out a free and fair investigation and punish whoever was responsible for the crime.
