Sunday drive to meet house tax target

- Counters at RMC ward offices to remain open on weekends this month

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched a special campaign to fulfil its holding tax collection target.

This month, special counters will remain open in ward offices on Sundays to collect holding tax. This apart, mobile tax collectors have been asked to get cracking.

Informing this, RMC’s public relations officer Naresh Kumar Sinha said the special tax collection counters at ward offices would run from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Sundays. One such counter will function from the civic body’s main office as well. In such wards that don’t have RMC offices, the counters will be set up at residences of ward commissioners.

Mobile tax collectors too have been directed to spend an extra hour in the field everyday this month. “A group of persons staying in a multi-storeyed building or any locality can call up the mobile tax collector concerned and pay their holding tax. The progress will be reviewed every third day,” Sinha added.

The RMC aims to collect over Rs 9 crore through holding tax this year. So far, it has managed to shore up only about Rs 6 crore and only a few days are left for the financial year to end before which it has to raise the remaining Rs 3 crore. As most people usually pay due tax towards the end of the fiscal, the RMC has launched a special drive.

The amount varies from locality to locality, depending on the size and type (kuchha or pucca) of the houses. In RMC’s domain, the rate varies from Rs 10-12 to Rs 2,500-3,000 per house per annum.

The civic authorities have agreed in principle to collect tax imposed on deep boring from families residing under its jurisdiction. A formal decision is likely to be taken at the standing committee meeting of the RMC on Monday.
