Tightening Noose: The Technical Special Cell on Sunday. (Bhola Prasad)

The East Singhbhum district police have decided to add more technology teeth for nailing new-age cyber criminals.
SSP Akhilesh Kumar Jha on Sunday said the force was working towards becoming tech-savvy with all officers told to brush up their technical skills. The move, which comes after a recent spurt in cyber crime in and around Jamshedpur, will see introduction of a dedicated network that will connect police stations with each other to facilitate collection and sharing of information.
Jha said the first step had already been taken with setting up of a cyber cell beside the control room of Sakchi police station.
“The cell — known as Technical Special Cell — has been working very efficiently since its inauguration. The officers posted there have been trained to detect call records of a mobile phone number and track callers using cellphone surveillance. However, we need to further strengthen the cell,” he said.
He added that they were working on modalities to also open similar cyber cells in other police stations and offices of the city. “The special technical cells will need to co-ordinate with the police teams so that as soon as a culprit is traced, we can swoop down and nab him,” Jha said.
Prodded about the computer network, the SSP said it would help connect district police stations with the Sakchi cell. So once the Technical Special Cell receives a complaint or manages to trace a call, it will route it back to the police station concerned for follow-up action, through the network.
He also pointed out that they were planning to purchase a large number of computers and accessories for which a requisition request would soon be sent to the police headquarters.
“Equipping the police stations with computers has become necessary. The officials will be trained at Technical Special Cell at Sakchi,” Jha said. According to sources, cyber crime has emerged as one of the major challenges faced by the district police with the anti-tease cell in particular receiving a large number of complaints that need tracing of mobile phone calls.
The district police, for instance, 10 days ago had reportedly arrested a youth from Patna for allegedly passing lewd comments at a girl working at a Sakchi-based private courier company. Though the victim had filed a complaint more than a month ago, the police, handicapped by lack of technological support, could neither trace nor act immediately.
