Sabeeth stars in Bagan win

Calcutta: CS Sabeeth netted a brace, while Aiborlang Khongjee scored the other as McDowell Mohun Bagan defeated EMTA Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 in a CFL Premier Division Super Nine match, at the Kalyani Stadium, on Saturday.

For the first 35 minutes Mohammedan Sporting did put up an impressive performance and threatened the Bagan defence. But Sabeeth’s goal in the 36th minute, much against the run of play, upset the rhythm of Mohammedan Sporting.

Mohammedan Sporting Somnath Khara failed to gather a Manish Bharghav delivery from the right and the ball nestled into the net after hitting Sabeeth’s back.

A bizarre goal, but that did not stop Sabeeth from celebrating wildly. Surprisingly, the entire Mohammedan Sporting defence stood and watched as the ball rolled over the goalline.

The second came seven minutes later when Okolie Odafe and Quinton Jacobs linked up well to find an unmarked Sabeeth whose prompt shot hit the back of the net.

The third came two minutes after the hour mark when substitute goalkeeper Arnab Das Sharma failed to gather Odafe’s low free-kick. Aiborlang, who was at the right place at the right time, kept his cool and placed the ball in the near post.

It was Mohammedan Sporting who looked more vibrant on the day. Liberian Alfred Jaryan and Ashim Biswas worked in tandem with Jerry Zirsangha and Lalmangiah Zuala stretching the Bagan defence. Alfred who is also the Mohammedan Sporting captain was very impressive and looked like Edeh Chidi of 2004-05.

Hardworking, good positional sense and no-frills attitude. It will be a surprise if Alfred is not snapped up by one of the high-profile clubs in the next season.

In another match, Prayag United SC defeated Southern Samity 3-1 at the Khardah Stadium. Ranty Martins scored twice, while Kayne Vincent netted the other. For Samity, Marcos Perrira scored off a penalty in the 56th.
