Hazaribagh, March 2: Four PLFI rebels who underwent training in Gumla and are suspected of involvement in the murder of the Congress district chief in Chatra in January were nabbed from Ichak in Hazaribagh this morning.
Acting on a tip-off, Hazaribagh superintendent of police (SP) Manoj Kaushik rushed a team to Ichak, some 17km from the district headquarters.
Amit Munda, Amit Paswan, Rinku Kumar and Kauleshwar Mahto were arrested in a forest. They revealed that they were trying to strengthen the outfit in Hazaribagh and involved in extorting people.
A rifle that they had stolen from Chatra police, a countrymade rifle, a revolver and cartridges were also recovered, besides uniforms and four mobile handsets. Kaushik said Mahto was a resident of Jordag village at Barkagaon in the district, while the rest were from Chatra. They are aged between 30 and 35.
The SP said the police would take the rebels in remand and grill them in connection with the murder of Chatra Congress president Shankar Prasad Sahu on January 12.
“We have inputs that the PLFI killed Sahu. The involvement of the four arrested rebels cannot be ruled out,” Kaushik added.
Meanwhile, the police also arrested six coal smugglers, whose identities have not been ascertained, after raids by three teams at several areas in Muffasil, Barkagaon and Ichak last midnight.
Kaushik said the police also seized seven tractors, each carrying three tonne coal, and three motorbikes.
