Ranchi, March 2: Supreme Court judge M.Y. Eqbal today inaugurated a holiday family court on the Ranchi court premises which, starting tomorrow, will hear cases on Sundays.
The concept — a brainchild of Justice Eqbal — had first been put into practise in Tamil Nadu. The courts had been mooted mainly for litigants who were employed with the corporate or private sector and could not take out time for visiting the courts on weekdays.
After the inauguration, Justice Eqbal said the concept of holding courts on Sundays or holidays was to make the litigants aware of the fact that the judges and the judiciary were working tirelessly to solve their disputes.
“The holiday courts have been a huge success in the southern part of the country and Jharkhand is the second state where this concept has been introduced,” Eqbal said.
A senior high court official added that similar holiday family courts would start functioning in places like Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Deoghar, Daltonganj, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh from tomorrow.
“The judicial officers presiding over such holiday family courts will be rotated and posted on a roster basis,” the official said.
According to sources as many as 31 cases had been listed to be taken up by the family court on its first Sunday tomorrow. The court, to be presided over by principal judge Sajjan Kumar Dubey, will mainly hear cases related to matrimonial disputes, maintenance and guardianship related cases.
The lawyers, though surprised, too sounded excited at the new concept with advocate Vipul Kumar stating that he had never thought that he would have to come and work on a holiday.
“But I believe the courts will be highly beneficial for litigants who are otherwise busy. It will also help in clearing the huge backlog of cases,” Kumar said.
