Those looking for jobs now have some real-life stories to draw inspiration from. A collection of 53 short pieces on corporate life — Make It or Break It, Mantras for a Successful Career by Partha Sarathi Basu — was launched at Starmark, Mani Square Mall, recently.
“My first job required me to leave my hometown. I remember going to Howrah station with 50-odd friends and family members to find that my ticket had not been confirmed. Worse still, no one at the office even knew that I was joining. Till that day at the station, I had çonsidered myself god’s gift to the company,” said Basu, the chief financial officer and director of AkzoNobel.
Basu wants to show aspiring corporate executives the real picture behind the glass facade. “The stories are the result of my observations over the past 13 years and what I have gathered from friends and acquaintances. Each story has its own specific message,” said Basu about his third book. The author took to writing after the birth of his first child, when a handbook on childbirth and time management helped him greatly. “The handbook helped me and my working wife through a difficult period. That’s when it struck me that I could have done with a handbook when I joined work. Life would have then been simpler and expectations lower,” said the Gurgaon-based author.
Make It… , published by Penguin, is Basu’s second non-fiction title following his tryst with fiction in 2010, With or Without You.
“Authors tend to get repetitive by the time they get to their third book but that is not the case with Partha. His third is a fresh read and one can relate to the stories,” said Pratip Kar, the director of Globsyn Business School, at the launch. |
