Calcutta: Success of the underdog is always a fascinating thing in sport. It gives rise to a new horizon and triggers fresh expectations. That has exactly been the case with Assam in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year.
Talent, hard work and the alertness to exploit chances have seen them overcome one hurdle after another. The best of the lot was of course the quarter-final triumph over mighty Mumbai, on Thursday.
So when Assam take on Kerala in a semi-final encounter, in Visakhapatnam, on Saturday, they will be the favourites to move into the final. Not because they have reputed players in their ranks, but simply because of the good cricket that they are playing.
Captain Abu Nechim Ahmed sounded confident.
“We have won against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy this season. We know a thing or two about the side,” Abu Nechim said on Friday. His words almost sounded like a warning to Kerala.
For Kerala, speedster Sreesanth will have to play an important role.
