‘Confusion’ over board examination questions

Some Madhyamik examinees have alleged that terms used in Friday’s geography question paper such as “dead volcano” and “lateritic soil” had caused confusion among them as they were not mentioned in their textbooks.

Question No. 2b (V) in the English version of the question paper read: “Barren Island is an example of dead volcano.” The students were asked to indicate whether the statement was true or false.

According to the students, their textbook mentions extinct volcanoes but not dead ones.

Some students writing in Bengali said there was no mention of “lateritic” soil {question No. 3 (f)} in their textbook. Those writing in English, however, said they had been taught about lateritic soil.

Students from Bengali-medium schools also complained that they had problems with question number 6 (b), which asked them to define niropekkho adrata and aapekshik adrata (absolute humidity and relative humidity), as their textbook used the term chorom adrata instead of aapekshik adrata.

“The geographical terms are not exactly the same in the Bengali and English versions of textbooks. The board should ensure better coordination between those who set papers to avoid such confusion,” said a geography teacher at a Madhyamik school.

Kalyanmoy Ganguly, administrator, West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, said there was no mistake or question from outside the syllabus in the geography paper but the board will look into the complaints.
