Blaze-hit father passes away

Ved Prakash Gupta, 49, who had suffered 98 per cent burns following a blaze in the kitchen of his Girish Park home on Wednesday night, died on Friday morning.

The trader’s wife, Kavita, 47, is still on ventilator. She has suffered 95 per cent burns.

The couple’s younger child, Aditi, is to appear for the Higher Secondary exams, which start on March 13. “I want to sit for my exams,” was what the braveheart, who saw her parents in flames and tried her best to save them, had told Metro on Thursday.

Friday, however, was different. According to her relatives, she did not speak a word after getting news of her father’s death.

“Yash was the first of the two children who came to know about their father’s passing away. Aditi came to know only after bhaiya’s body was brought home,” said Ved’s brother Yathindra Prakash.

“She was inconsolable but did not utter a word. Once she gets over the initial shock, we will try to make sure that she appears for the exam.”

The authorities of Shri Vishuddhananda Saraswati Marwari Hospital in Burrabazar, where Ved was shifted after the couple were admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, informed the family about the death around 5.15am.

Kavita was shifted to Desun Hospital, off EM Bypass, and from there to Dreamland nursing home in Shyambazar on Friday evening. “Her condition is very critical. She is in CCU and on ventilator,” said an official of the nursing home.

The blaze was apparently triggered by a gas leak.

The members of the Gupta family, who live on all three floors of the building, are not being allowed in. “The electricity lines have been snapped. A police picket has been put up and we are not being allowed to enter the building. How long can we live in a relative’s house?” rued a family member.
