AIUDF wins zilla parishad

Dhubri, Feb. 28: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) secured simple majority in Dhubri zilla parishad (ZPC) though the Congress is upbeat over forming the parishad with 10 members in the 29-member body.

The AIUDF has secured 16 seats while the Congress has won 10. The AGP and the BJP secured one seat each while one seat was captured by an Independent candidate.

Congress candidate for Airkata ZPC, Ashan Ali, demanded recounting of votes alleging anomalies in counting. His demand was, however, rejected by the returning officer. AIUDF candidate Amir Fisal has been declared winner by a margin of 34 votes.

The president of the Dhubri district unit of the AIUDF, Aminur Ahmed, said Amir Fisal was declared winner and the winning slip was issued to him by the official-in-charge of the counting hall.

The AIUDF is all set to form the Dhubri zilla parishad as the party bagged 16 ZPCs and thus has secured a simple majority.

The Congress camp, however, also appears to be upbeat even after bagging 10 seats.

“Though we are down and failed to get the majority, there has been an increase in percentage of votes at all levels of panchayat elections. We are hopeful of forming the Dhubri zilla parishad,” Dhubri district Congress president Sushil Roy said.

Roy said there are some winners, including the Independent, who are in touch with the Congress. “So the party is sure to form the Dhubri zilla parishad body,” an upbeat Roy added.

Dhubri district unit BJP secretary Prosenjit Dutta said the party was yet to decide whether it would extend support or remain neutral.

“At the party meeting, it will be decided if we will support any party or sit in the Opposition bench,” Dutta added.

Dhubri district unit AGP president Amal Chandra Saha said the AIUDF had got majority and so question of supporting did not arise as of now.

“But if situation changes, we will take a decision accordingly,” Saha added.
