Bengal ousted

Calcutta: Bengal bowed out of the Santosh Trophy despite beating Manipur 4-2 in a Group B match, in Quilon, on Wednesday.

For Bengal to qualify, Karnataka needed to beat Punjab. But that didn’t happen as Punjab won 2-0 to earn a semi-final berth. Prem Kumar scored both the goals.

Punjab had earlier defeated Manipur 3-0 and Bengal 4-3.

Jagannath Sana (fourth), Nabin Hela (17th), Snehashis Datta (57th) and captain Dipendu Biswas (90+1) were the scorers for Bengal, while Prem Meetei netted a brace for Manipur.

“The Punjab loss on Monday sealed our fate. We hoped that Karnataka would rise above the script but then you cannot expect others to do your job,” Bengal captain, Dipendu said.

“It’s a young team... And there are lot of postives to take from this meet. In Nabin (Hela), we have a promising striker.”

Services also made the grade defeating Odisha 2-0 in a Group A match.

The defending champions advanced by virtue of better goal difference.

Kerala play Maharshtra in the first semi-final on Thursday, while Punjab meet Services the next day.
