‘Overstay’ glare on VC

Feb. 27: A Left-backed teachers’ association in Burdwan University has accused interim vice-chancellor Smriti Kumar Sarkar of “illegally” continuing in his post despite his six-month tenure expiring in December.

The Burdwan University Teachers’ Association (Buta) has decided to approach the governor.

Sarkar was appointed the interim vice-chancellor on June 16 last year.

Although the order issued by the higher education department on June 13 says Sarkar can continue “as the interim vice-chancellor till a new vice-chancellor is selected by the search committee”, the Burdwan University (Amendment) Act, 2011, says a vacant vice-chancellor’s post will have to be filled up within six months.

Sarkar said: “The government order clearly states that the interim vice-chancellor can continue till a new one is selected by the search committee. As the search committee is yet to be set up, I am well within my rights to continue.”
