Manipur blast kills jawan

Imphal, Feb. 26: An army jawan was killed and three others suffered splinter injuries this morning when militants triggered a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Churachandpur district.

Militants affiliated to the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) triggered the IED using a remote controlled device while a foot patrol of the 1/11 Gurkha Rifles was passing Bangla village along National Highway 150, around 60km from Imphal at 7am.

In a statement, the PLA said its Special Warfare Team carried out the attack. The PLA also claimed responsibility for the attack on an Assam Rifles post at Saibol village of Chandel district, on January 21.

In today’s attack, naik W. Kailash was killed on the spot while lance naik M. Sushilkumar, rifleman Amit Tamang and subedar Bahadur Raj suffered splinter injuries.

In another incident, police bomb squads safely defused an IED recovered from near the office complex of Border Roads Task Force at Lamphel on the outskirts of Imphal around 6am today.

Residents of the area found the bomb first and they informed the police.

No one claimed responsibility for planting of the bomb.

The Kuki State Demand Committee has decried the attack.
