Kokrajhar, Feb. 26: A weeklong mountaineering training, organised by the district sports office, Chirang, in association with sports and youth welfare department, Bodoland Territorial Council, began at Bhumiswar hill in Chirang district today.
Over hundreds of youths and students participated in the training programmes, organised to cerate awareness on mountaineering among people in the region.
The participants will get training in rock climbing training, trekking, rappelling, chimney-climbing, monkey crawling, surviving the night in forest and mountains, cooking and other skills. They will be also taught the use of mountaineering equipment.
Assam transport and tourism minister Chandan Brahma, who inaugurated the programme, said more effort was needed to promote adventure tourism in Assam.
Senior mountaineering instructor Himmat Boro said the course would be beneficial for students to increase their confidence. “Every moment during mountaineering is a challenge. It will give them courage and improve self-confidence among students,” he said.
Nuruddin Trophy: Hosts Dibrugarh defeated Goalpara by three wickets in the two-day Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy Senior Inter-district Elite Group cricket tournament at Jalan Stadium in Dibrugarh today. Chasing’s Goalpara’s total of 271, Dibrugarh reached 276 for seven in 71 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 118 (4x18) by Jyotiraditya Chetia.
In another match in the plate group, Margherita defeated Nazira by the virtue of a first innings lead at Jorhat today. Margherita scored 246 in their first innings, while Nazira were all out for 245.
