Guwahati, Feb. 26: Assam today registered their third straight victory, defeating Odisha by six wickets to emerge East Zone leaders in the women’s T20 cricket tournament under way in Jharkhand.
In today’s match at Dhanbad, the Assam women won the toss and put the opponents to bat first.
Odisha were restricted to a modest total of 98 for seven in the 20 overs and Assam reached 104 for four in 18.2 overs. It was once again thanks to an allround show by Indian international Reema Malhotra, who leads Assam as the skipper, that Assam posted the facile victory today.
Malhotra took three wickets each, along with Latika Kumari, conceding 22 and 25 runs respectively, before topscoring for Assam with an unbeaten 37 (4x4). Opener Nisha Sharma scored a breezy 30 (4x2) and Anita Lodhi chipped in with 12 (4x3) facing only five balls.
J. Barik, Sujata Mallick and Ritu Singh of Odisha picked up a wicket each, giving away 12, 14 and 17 runs respectively.
Earlier, opener Madhuri Meheta topscored for Odisha with a steady 40 (4x3) while teammates M. Behera and P. Mohanty contributed 16 each.
After today’s win, Assam top the tally with 12 points to qualify for the knockouts.
Though Odisha, too, are on 12, they are placed second, having lost to Assam in the head-to-head today. Assam will meet Tripura in their last zonal match tomorrow.
