Calcutta: “Fantastic” is how former India coach and Australia captain Greg Chappell described Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s performance in the ongoing Chennai Test.
“Dhoni has been fantastic,” he said of the India captain.
Greg is in the city for the second annual Tiger Pataudi Memorial Lecture, a joint initiative of the Bengal Club and The Telegraph in association with the Oberoi Group.
Dhoni, who made his Test debut (vs Sri Lanka, in Chennai, December 2005) when Greg was the coach, scripted a marvellous 224 off 265 balls that helped India take a 192-run lead. Australia, in their second innings, fell prey to the Indian spin attack and have been reduced to 232 for nine at the close of play on the fourth day.
Asked if he was disappointed at the way the Australians have performed at the start of the four-Test series, Greg said: “The series has just began.”
Greg, who is currently Cricket Australia’s National Talent Manager, reached the city late on Monday after almost 17 hours of travelling from Melbourne. He is accompanied by wife Judith.
