Hasem railway wishlist

Malda, Feb. 25: Malda MP Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury today handed over a set of proposals on railway projects in the district to Union railway minister Pawan Bansal in New Delhi, a day before the presentation of the railway budget.

“During the past four years, I have submitted several proposals to the Union railway ministers who were from Trinamul. None of them incorporated those in the budgets. This year, the ministry is with the Congress and one of the Union ministers of state is Adhir Ranjan Choudhury who hails from our neighbouring district Murshidabad,” Hasem said.

“We are optimistic that in the railway budget that would be presented tomorrow, there would be some announcements for Malda,” said the Union minister of state for health.

The proposals include new trains, including a bi-weekly Rajdhani between Malda and New Delhi. “We have also asked for two express trains, one between Malda and Sealdah, another between Malda and Cooch Behar. A new train from Malda to south India is required,” said the MP.

Hasem has also sought line electrification from Burdwan to Malda Town, development of nearby stations, flyovers and underpasses in the district. “We have proposed augmentation of facilities at the railway hospital. Malda station has only five platforms and they are small and cannot accommodate trains with 22 coaches. I have brought these issues to the notice of Adhir Ranjan Choudhury who has assured me that steps would be taken,” Hasem said.
