Violence on Ravenshaw campus

Cuttack, Feb. 25: Violence erupted on Ravenshaw University campus this evening, leaving a student injured and three motorcycles damaged.

Official sources said that inmates of the New PG Hostel and East Hostel attacked each other following an argument between the two groups in the afternoon.

“Later, more than 200 students entered East Hostel and attacked the inmates. They also torched a motorcycle and ransacked properties in the hostel,” said Sanjiv Prusty, a second-year student.

Tension ran high on the campus as the rival groups pelted stones at each other.

“I was inside my room when over 100 students entered the East Hostel with sticks and other weapons. I suffered injuries on my right hand in the attack,” said A. Aditya, an inmate of East Hostel.

The university has begun a probe into the clash, while students said they had failed to put a check on the entry of non-students though the system of vehicular pass which was introduced ahead of students’ union election last October.

They alleged the authorities had also undertaken an eviction drive to free the East Hostel of non-students last year, but it had not yielded any result.

University officials, on the other hand, said they were working on keeping outsiders at bay.

“We have already ordered an inquiry into today’s violence. We are still assessing the property damage,” said university registrar Padan Jena.
