Everest expedition flagged off

Imphal, Feb. 25: Manipur governor Gurbachan Singh Jagat formally flagged off the 1st North East India-Top of the World Mt Everest Expedition, 2013 and handed the ice-axe baton to the expeditionís team leader at Minuthong in Imphal West today.

The expedition comprises 16 members. Two-time Everester Anshu Jamsenpa from Arunachal Pradesh and 16-year-old N. Chingkheinganba will be part of the team.

During the flagging-off ceremony, irrigation and flood control department minister I. Hemochandra Singh handed the ice axe to chef-de-mission D.S. Poonia, Manipur chief secretary.

It was then handed over to Manipur governor Gurbachan Singh Jagat and to team leader L. Surjit Singh.

The team will head for Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh for physical conditioning and the final flag-off will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20.

Sports awards: Olympian boxer L. Devendro Singh of Manipur has been adjudged the Northeast Sportsperson of the Year for the Assam Sports Journalists Associationís annual sports awards 2012-13. Footballer Holicharan Narzary has been named the state Sportsperson of the Year while chess player Sahil Dey is the Most Promising Sportsperson of the year.

Weightlifter Apurba Chetia will be awarded the Best Junior Sportsperson of the Year and veteran organiser Tapan Dutta will be honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the ceremony to be held in Guwahati at 5pm on March 3.

Selection camp: A selection trial will be held from 6.30am on March 1 at Nehru Stadium here to select the Guwahati team for the R.G. Baruah Trophy under-17 inter-district cricket tournament from March 15.

Guwahati will open campaign on home turf here from March 17.
