Duo held for theft

Jorhat, Feb. 25: Manish Sharma and Arvind Purohit, travelling by the 12424 Up Rajdhani Express from New Delhi to Dibrugarh, were arrested by police at Mariani railway station in the district last night on charges of trying to steal luggage. The duo allegedly went from compartment B7 to B2 late in the night and tried to steal the luggage of Rajkumar Khakotia, who caught them red-handed.

Arrested

Jorhat: Five persons were arrested on Sunday night when they were caught stealing Neccon Power Infra Ltd’s cable in the Meleng area of the district. An FIR had been lodged by company CEO Abhishek Jain.

Road mishap

Dhubri: Rashidul Haque, 30, of Mukalmua in Nalbari district, died on the spot when a speeding Tata Magic hit his bike on Guru Teg Bahadur Road in Dhubri district on Monday.

Ulfa linkmen

Dhubri: Two Ulfa linkmen — Rahimuddin, 18, and Baktar Ali, 24 — were apprehended in a joint operation by police and the army on Monday. The duo were taken to Manikpur police station.

Renamed

Dhubri: The Garo National Council, in a meeting held at Hudakona in Goalpara district on Monday, renamed itself as Garo National Union. It strongly opposed the inclusion of villages dominated by Garo people in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council area draft of villages published for delimitation on February 20 in Goalpara and Kamrup districts.
