Lalkamal gets a call-up

New Delhi: Lalkamal Bhowmick has been named in the 23-member Indian team for the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers to be played in Yangon, from March 2.

Seoul: The Indian squash team won a gold and a silver medal at the 16th Asian Junior Team Championships which concluded here on Sunday. The Indian girls beat Hong Kong China 2-1 in a close tie, while the boys lost to Pakistan 0-2.

Archery meet

Calcutta: Rahul Banerjee and Deepika Kumari emerged champions in the men’s and women’s recurve section of the second National Ranking Archery Championships in Hyderabad, which concluded on Sunday.

Anand held

Zurich: Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw with Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the first round of the Zurich Chess Challenge. The other game of the four-player double round-robin tournament between Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Boris Gelfand of Israel also ended in a draw.

Daytona crash

Daytona: A fiery pile-up at the Daytona speedway on Saturday injured at least 28 fans and a driver after the 10-car crash sent car debris, including a tire, flying into the crowd in the final lap of the Nationwide Nascar race.

Kenan wins

Philip Island: India’s first World Superbike team, Mahi Racing, began its World Supersport Championship campaign with a bang when its lead rider Kenan Sofuoglu of Turkey comfortably won the first race of the season here on Sunday. Sofuoglu’s triumph positioned Mahi Racing Team as one of the front runners for the title in this 15-round championship.

New faces

Wellington: New Zealand will head into their first Test against England on March 6 with a new opening partnership after the recall of Peter Fulton and inclusion of the uncapped Hamish Rutherford and Tom Latham in their squad on Sunday.

Bangla squad

Dhaka: Bangladesh on Sunday named middle-order batsman Mominul Haque to replace Shakib-al Hasan in next month’s Test series against Sri Lanka after the star all-rounder was ruled out due to injury.
