‘Dhoni is a destroyer’

Calcutta: Former cricketers heaped praise on Mahendra Singh Dhoni after his career-best knock of unbeaten 206 in the first Test against Australia, on Sunday.

While Sunil Gavaskar said Dhoni’s onslaught left most of the bowlers confused as they didn’t know where to pitch the ball, VVS Laxman called Dhoni ‘a destroyer.’

Here’s what they had to say (alphabetically)

Sunil Gavaskar: It was a planned innings and a well thought out innings. When he saw that Virat Kohli was batting so well, he decided to take on the dangerman Lyon and try to hit him out of the attack. That showed that he was extremely confident. He succeeded in his plan to a great extent.

When he realised that the new ball is going to be taken, he went after the fast bowlers… His onslaught left most of the bowlers confused as they didn’t know where to pitch the ball… It was a fabulous innings and it could pretty well turn out to be a match-winning innings.

VVS Laxman: Without a doubt, one can say that Dhoni is a destroyer… Whenever he is on song, he destroys not only the opposition bowlers but also the opposition’s confidence.

Today, as a captain, he played a marvellous knock and took his team to a commanding position. The way he shielded Bhuvneshwar Kumar was praiseworthy… He was extremely confident today.

Glenn McGrath (on Twitter): Great innings by MS Dhoni 206*. India in a strong position against the Aussies.

Suresh Raina (on Twitter): That was a dominating double! Congratulations @msdhoni Take it to a triple ton mate.

Yuvraj Singh (on Twitter): Congratulations! To @imVkohli and @msdhoni on their spectacular knocks specially ms a double ton in test cricket is a memory.

Shane Warne (on Twitter): WOW, MS Dhoni is going off here in Chennai, amazing batting.
