Suryanelli complaint

Kottayam, Feb. 24 (PTI): The victim in the Suryanelli sex slave case, who had filed a fresh police complaint against Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson P.J. Kurien, has sent letters to Kottayam and Idukki superintendents of police asking them to register her plea.

The girl along with her parents went to a Kottayam police station on Friday to file the complaint but it was not registered. They are planning to approach the high court if they don’t get any response from Kottayam and Idukki SPs, the girl’s lawyer said.

Isro blessing

Tirupati (PTI): Isro chief K. Radhakrishnan on Sunday worshipped at the Lord Venkateswara hill shrine for the successful launch of Indo-French satellite SARAL onboard Isro’s workhorse rocket PSLV from Sriharikota on Monday.

Cong leader

New Delhi (PTI): Tamil Nadu Youth Congress president M. Yuvaraja, a supporter of Union minister G.K. Vasan, has been suspended from the post on “disciplinary grounds”. Yuvaraja was elected to the post for the second time in October last year.

Women panel

Mumbai (PTI): A committee set up by the Maharashtra government to recommend measure to curb crimes against women has suggested a clamp down on obscene and offensive material available on the Internet and various social networking sites.

Zoo vehicle

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi zoo was unable to avail battery-operated vehicle services since last week as the contract with the private operator had ended in January. The pollution-free vehicles were offered on rent to visitors for a trip around the zoo. The zoo authorities had issued a tender for a new contract.

Man kills wife

Thane (PTI): An elderly man allegedly murdered his 61-year-old wife doubting her fidelity in Thane on Saturday night, police said. Jehangir Gowardhan Pawar, 68, stabbed his wife Vaijayanti several times with a sharp weapon and fled from the spot. The couple, who have three married children, used to have frequent quarrels.

Woman shot

New Delhi, Feb. 24 (PTI): A 25-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by a “drunk” man in a busy area in south Delhi on Sunday night when she objected to his misbehaviour.

Police said the incident took place when the victim identified as Pooja was with her husband Mohan Prasad on the Ring Road close to the busy inter state bus terminal and near Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. The assailant has been arrested by the police.

Ishrat case

Ahmedabad (PTI): The CBI has arrested one more police officer in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan in 2004, officials of the agency said. Bharat Patel, an inspector in the special operation group, was produced in court on Sunday.

Fauja retires

Hong Kong, Feb. 24 (PTI): The world’s oldest marathon runner, 101-year-old Fauja Singh, retired today from competitive events as a “very happy” man.

gh is a British citizen of Indian origin. Nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado”, Singh today ran the Hong Kong marathon’s 10km race in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. Singh, who turns 102 on April 1, became the oldest man to run a full marathon at Toronto in 2011. But his record was not recognised by Guinness World Records because he doesn’t have a birth certificate to prove his age, only a passport.

Nawab palace

Rampur (PTI): Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Mohammad Azam Khan demanded the heirs of the former Nawabs to hand over their palace to Mohammad Ali Johar University, so that it can become a medical college. Khan said on Saturday that they had offered a reasonable price for the palace and reminded of his parlays with late begum of Nawab Murtaza Ali Khan, which proved fruitless.

Killer air gun

Tuticorin (PTI): A five-year-old girl playing with an air gun, used to shoot birds, shot her mother near Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin, police said. A friend of the girl’s father has been arrested for giving the gun to the girl, the police said.
