Silchar, Feb. 23: The authorities are gearing up to hold a peaceful byelection in Algapur Assembly constituency in Hailakandi district tomorrow.
The total number of voters in this constituency is 1,40,831 with a significant minority population.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is rooting for his party candidate Mehebubul Hasan Laskar, a greenhorn and a lawyer.
On the other hand, minister for public health engineering Goutam Roy has been campaigning in the backward areas for the past few days to whip up support for his wife, Mandira, 55, who has no political experience.
The AGP, whose leader and the former minister Shahidul Alam Choudhury, whose death last November led to the bypoll, has put up Kamrul Islam Choudhury as its nominee.
The deputy commissioner and returning officer for the bypoll, J.V. Balaji, said 14 companies of central paramilitary troops would be deployed for maintaining peace.
The constituency is spread over the districts of Hailakandi and Cachar.
Out of 170 polling booths, 45 are located in Tapang block in the adjoining Cachar district.
Both districts have been divided into 25 sectors.
Micro-observers will be stationed in 90 booths and people will use photo voter IDs for the first time in Assam.
