15 shops gutted in twin fires

Jamshedpur, Feb. 23: Property worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed after 15 shops were gutted at Mango and Adityapur in separate fires last night and in the wee hours today.

Flames engulfed Chawal market in Mango around 11.45pm yesterday and gutted three shops, while the second fire broke out at Dindli Bazar at Adityapur in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan between 2.30 and 3 in the morning, reducing 12 shops to ashes.

More shops could have been gutted in Mango had local residents not taken steps to douse the flames. Later, three fire tenders sent by the administration reached the spot and put out the fire after one-and-a-half hours.

A short circuit is believed to have caused the fire. Teams from Mango, Olidih and Sakchi police rushed to the spot.

Saurav Kumar, a resident, said he first spotted the flames inside the shop of one Shriya Sao. The fire spread to two shops, belonging to Krishna Sahu and Shiv Kumar Sao.

Kumar added that Shriya Sao used to sell stoves and kerosene and also refill cooking gas cylinders.

At Dindli Bazar, it took more than three hours for fire tender personnel from Tata Steel and the administration to control the inferno.
