It is carnival time for the city once again. But, the 174th Founder’s Day will be different in more ways than one.
Jusco has decided not to restrict Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata’s birth anniversary celebrations on March 3 to Jubilee Park and company establishments alone. Instead, it will extend the festive makeover, complete with shamianas of lights, to two more parks and thoroughfares, where traffic management will see some safe changes too.
According to sources in Jusco’s electrical division, nearly 250 light artists from famed Chandernagore in Bengal are giving shape to illuminated masterpieces, which will be exhibited at Nildih Park, near Tube Maker’s Club, and Bhetya Park in Kadma, besides Jubilee Park.
“We are using LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs to illuminate Jubilee Park. The lighting will be technically similar in all three parks and will be inaugurated (by pressing a button) simultaneously on March 2 evening,” said Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan.
While Nildih Park sprawls over six acres and was opened to public only last year, the four-acre Bhetya Park is already a favourite for residents of Kadma, Shastrinagar and Dhatkidih.
The Jusco official conceded that the objective of accessorising all three parks was to avoid overcrowding at Jubilee Park, which at times becomes unsafe. “Besides, revellers will have the option of visiting more than one getaway,” he said.
The light festival, which draws people in droves, will continue till March 5. The theme of this year’s celebrations is ‘Towards World Class’. So, floats and models showcasing achievements of various departments of Tata Steel and Jusco in 2012-13 will be an added attraction.
Besides the parks, four arteries — Inner Circle Road (from Jusco power substation to Centre for Excellence), Office Road, Straight Mile Road (from Dorabji Tata Park to Baug-e-Jamsheed School) and Pipeline Road — will also remain illuminated for four days from March 2.
To promote the safety mantra of Tata Steel managing director H.M. Nerurkar, special parking zones will be made at Loyola School Ground, in front of Sacred Heart Convent, and Flower Show Ground in front of Keenan Stadium for convenience of park visitors.
For smooth movement of both pedestrians and traffic near Jubilee Park, drop gates will be erected at four locations on Inner Circle Road — near Jusco power substation at CH Area, Income Tax office and XLRI, and behind Jamshedpur Cricket Association office. Drop gates will also be put up on Jubilee Road roundabout near SDO’s residence, Office Road (near gate of Park Enclave) and on the road along Sacred Heart Convent School leading to Jubilee Park.
