New Delhi: India virtually ensured a next round berth in the World Hockey League when they got past a determined Ireland 3-2 at the Dhyan Chand Stadium, here, on Thursday.
Having won the most crucial encounter of the six-nation round robin, India are now on top of the ladder with nine points from three matches. Given the hosts’ strength and current form, India are not expected to falter in the last two matches against China and Bangladesh.
While Rupinder Pal Singh, VR Raghunath and Dharamvir Singh scored for Michael Nobbs’ boys, Conor Harte and Eugene Magee twice brought back Ireland into the game.
Overall, it was a fruitful day for the home side. In the women’s section, the hosts outclassed Fiji 10-0 and captured the top position in the group after Russia snatched a point from favourites Japan.
Forwards Rani Rampal (2), Roselin Dung Dung (2), drag-flicker Jaspreet Kaur (2), Yendala Soundarya, Namita Toppo, Navjot Kaur and Chanchan Devi Thokchom struck the goals.
