Our task is cut out: Shukla

Calcutta: With Bengal’s batting imploding yet again in the competition, captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla called upon his teammates to stand up and make themselves counted on Friday’s all important tie against Assam at Eden Gardens.

Bengal need to win this game to confirm a berth in the pre-quarter final stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Else, their campaign may be over in the zonal leg itself if either of Jharkhand or Odisha win their match with a bonus point. Even if they don’t win a bonus pioint and Bengal lose, one of them may pip the hosts to the next round provided they have a better net run rate.

“I really don’t understand why our batting has failed to click every match,” Shukla said after the game. “It’s highly disappointing to lose in this manner. We get one final chance on Friday to make the necessary corrections and play according to expectations.

“We have to work very hard and make some changes in the team as Assam are playing terrific cricket at present. So our task is cut out,” he added.

Shukla opined that toss would be a crucial factor at the Eden. “Our batting is not so bad that we’ll be rolled over for just a 121. Losing the toss was crucial. We need to win that on Friday,” Shukla said.
