A life-size statue of Sailen Manna is set to be installed in Salt Lake (picture left by Sankar Nag Das of the figure in clay).
The date for installation of the statue is February 27, the first death anniversary of the football legend who spent the last years of his life in FD Block.
The initiative has been taken by local MLA Sujit Bose. “Ever since the day Mannada left us I have been planning on doing something to perpetuate his presence in the township. It is a matter of our pride that a sportsman of his calibre lived here,” he said.
The figure is 8ft high and along with the base stands at a height of 12ft. “The project came to me in end-December. After studying the few photographs that were there with his family, I sculpted a clay figure. The casting process is on. The statue will be of fibre glass,” says sculptor Pradip Rudrapaul, who stays in BJ Block.
The statue will be installed in the Bidhannagar Municipal Sports Complex ground. A colourful programme is being planned to mark the occasion. Footballers of all three major clubs are being invited. A veterans’ match is also on the cards.
