Get set for roller-coaster ride

- Amusement park to come up along marine drive between Konark & Puri

Bhubaneswar, Feb. 21: Temples, sun and sand, yes. But now, you can also look forward to roller coaster rides.

The state tourism department will set up an amusement park on the Puri-Konark Marine Drive in public-private-partnership mode. The department has floated an expression of interest in this regard. This will be a first-of-its-kind project in the state.

Sources said 100 acres have been identified at Bangara village. The site is located to the north of Puri — between Puri and Konark — alongside the marine drive. The beach flows on one side of the site while it can also be accessed through the Marine Drive, which is nearly 1km away.

The park will have 30 state-of-the-art rides along with theme-based parks such as animal kingdom, cultural park, water park and food outlets. It will also have a recreational area for children and outdoor and indoor playing zones.

“The 30 rides will include 10 each for the family, kids and teenagers. We are also planning to have a 3-D movie theatre and a three-star hotel. Two conference halls are also proposed with capacities of 500 and 150 seats respectively,” said the official.

Though the exact cost of the project is yet to be estimated, sources in the tourism department said the project was likely to cost around Rs 100 crore. Five private parties, including one from Singapore, have expressed interest in this regard. However, the number is likely to increase as the last date of submission of the expression of interest has been fixed for March 12.

Tourism director H.S. Upadhyay said the complex would attract more tourists to Puri and Konark. “The government will provide the land while the private agency will develop the park. We have asked bidders to submit their proposals,” said Upadhyay.
