Rape victim to miss exams

- Police team leaves for Tezpur

Feb. 21: The 18-year-old girl from Tezpur who was allegedly gang-raped twice — once in her hometown on Friday and once at Paltan Bazar on Sunday night — will miss sitting for her higher secondary examinations, which began on Monday.

A police officer investigating the case today told The Telegraph that the girl, a student of a convent in Tezpur, was preparing for her higher secondary examination but would not be able to appear because of the “shocking” incident that took place on Friday.

“The girl left her house for Saraswati Puja on Friday but she did not return as she was first molested in a dhaba and later locked inside a house near Kamrupia Naamghar in Tezpur and gang-raped on Friday night and Saturday. She was freed on Sunday but she was scared to return home and reached the city instead (and was gang-raped again). As a result, she missed her examination,” the officer said.

City police have arrested 10 persons so far from Guwahati and Tezpur, following investigation into an FIR lodged by the girl on Monday where she stated that she was raped at Hotel Lucent in Paltan Bazar on Sunday night.

The police yesterday arrested seven persons from Tezpur, including the youth, with whom she got introduced to on her way to Guwahati on Sunday.

The youth promised to take her to her relative’s house at Chenikuthi but instead took her to Hotel Lucent at Paltan Bazar and handed her over to the hotel staff who allegedly gang-raped her on Sunday night.

On Monday, the police arrested three persons, including the hotel’s manager. The accused persons are all aged between 26 and 30 years.

Four persons, who were arrested yesterday afternoon, were today produced in the court of Kamrup CJM, which remanded them in seven-day police custody.

The police have arrested 10 persons in connection with the case and sources in Paltan Bazar police station said all have been booked under Sections 120B, 342, 354 and 376 (2) (g) IPC.

Section 120 B relates to criminal conspiracy, 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (sexual offence) while Section 376 (2) (g) relates to gang rape and may invite imprisonment for a term not less than 10 years and which may extend up to life and a fine.

A city police team today left for Tezpur to collect details regarding the alleged gang rape of the girl on Friday and Saturday.
