Two persons who were undergoing treatment after sustaining injuries in separate mishaps succumbed on Thursday morning, one at Tatanagar Railway Hospital and the other at MGM Medical College and Hospital.
Kharagpur resident Sheikh Ramzan (45), who fell from a passenger train near Tatanagar on Tuesday evening, died at the railway hospital in Khasmahal. Kartik Parmanik (75), hit by a speeding SUV on Wednesday afternoon while crossing the NH-33 in Chandil, died in MGM.
Ramzan, a rice trader, was returning to Kharagpur from Rourkela by Utkal Express on Tuesday evening when he slipped off the train on tracks, 500 yards from Tatanagar. He sustained a serious head injury. Bystanders rescued him and rushed him to the railway hospital, where he survived for a few hours. Relatives could not say why he slipped. GRP sent the body to MGM for post-mortem after which his relatives claimed it.
Parmanik, who was hit by the SUV on the highway between Chowka and Chandil around 3pm, had bled heavily. He reached MGM at 4pm. The SUV, speeding towards Chowka, escaped. Relatives said Parmanik could walk steadily but had grown deaf. “Perhaps he could not hear the horn,” said Gautam, the victim’s nephew. Police registered a case of rash driving against the unknown SUV’s driver.
