‘Drunken’ Lions are sent home

Calcutta/London: England Lions management on Wednesday confirmed that Matt Coles and Ben Stokes, who are on their tour of Australia, have been sent home for persistent late night drinking.

The team management issued both with a written warning as to their conduct, after the pair had been caught carousing in Melbourne earlier in the tour, but they ignored the warning.

The pair’s punishment comes soon after Andy Flower, England’s team director, visited the Lions. So far they have played three tour matches, and lost them all.

Nothing focuses the ire like losing in Australia, but those defeats are said to have nothing to do with the severity of the punishment.

“On a very challenging tour to Australia, both Matt and Ben have ignored the instructions given to them and it has been necessary to terminate their involvement in the tour,” ECB Performance Director David Parsons said.

“Both are very talented individuals and it is hoped that, with the support of the ECB and their respective counties, they will take positive steps to give themselves the very best chance of fulfilling their potential.

“There will be no replacement players called up to the squad as a result of this matter.”

Coles and Stokes, both apologised for their behaviour and said that they have learnt their lesson.
