Axe on illegal high rise buildings
Bhubaneswar: The housing and urban development department has decided to demolish portions of 139 high rise buildings that have been constructed in the capital city in violation of rules.
Sources said that the step was being taken following intense pressure from a section of the political class which was upset with the government's inaction in this front. They said that about 530 apartments approved by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority have come up in violation of the rules.
Bhubaneswar: Two German tourists resting on the Puri beach were looted by local youths, who fled with their bags. The bags contained credit cards, cash and passports, said the tourists. An FIR has been lodged in the local police station.
Bhubaneswar: The tourism department on Wednesday signed an MoU with the Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) to encourage energy conservation in tourism sector. According to the MoU, Teri will carry out an energy audit and advise the department on changes that can be brought in utilities to save power. It will also assist the department on complying with green rating for integrated habitat assessment.
Bhubaneswar: Police recovered a truck with ferro-chrome that went missing from a national highway in Khurda in January last week.
he truck was found abandoned inside a jungle. Some youths had stolen the truck after killing its driver. However, the culprits are yet to be nabbed.
Activists give in
Bhubaneswar: A total of 113 supporters of tribal outfit Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh on Wednesday surrendered before Naryanapatna police in Koraput district. Yesterday, 112 supporters of the outfit had also surrendered before the police. The development is likely to further erode the strength of CMAS convenor Nachika Linga, who is still absconding. However, senior police officers hope to nab him shortly.
Bhubaneswar: The State Housing Board has decided to initiate steps for recovering 38,800 decimal land from the clutches of encroachers. Official sources said this land had been encroached upon by as many as 3,352 people who have managed to go unpunished. The board thinks it is time to crack the whip on the encroachers.
Bhubaneswar: One person was killed and 55 others injured as a bus carrying pilgrims overturned at Ritaballi in Kandhamal district. The injured were rushed to a hospital at Bisham Cuttack and Muniguda in the adjoining Rayagada district. Police and district officials rushed to the spot for a probe.
Bhubaneswar: Forest officials of the state are worried about the disappearing greeneries in the tribal-dominated districts. The officials said forest cover in the state such as Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts was shrinking at an alarming rate. This not only poses a threat to the environment but would also tell upon the livelihood of tribals who depend on the forest produce.
