Balwa quizzed over 2G lawyer

New Delhi, Feb. 20: Swan Telecom promoter and 2G suspect Shahid Usman Balwa was today questioned over a purported conversation between a former CBI prosecutor and another co-accused, Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra, agency sources said.

The prosecutor, A.K. Singh, was removed after the tapes surfaced last week.

“We wanted some clarification from Balwa on whether he was ever in touch with prosecutor A.K. Singh or any other member of his team. We also quizzed him whether he was aware of the context in the conversation between Singh and Sanjay Chandra,” said a CBI officer after the four-hour grilling.

According to him, Balwa was summoned after his name came up in the purported conversation. “It seems the recording and leakage of purported conversations is the result of corporate rivalry in the telecom sector,” the officer added.

The recording fuelled suspicion of collusion as in the purported conversation, Singh is heard offering advice to Chandra on how to beat the prosecution strategy on the 2G scam in court.

Unitech has rejected the allegations, saying Chandra had never met the prosecutor outside court nor had any phone conversation with him.
