Making all things bright & beautiful

- Bougainvillaea vines, painted roads & roundabouts for Jamsetji birth anniversary

It will be a magenta makeover for Jamshedpur this Founder’s Day as the bloom of Brazil will lend the city its charming hue in the run-up to March 3.

The horticultural wing of Jusco is lavishing ornamental plants on roundabouts and along thoroughfares, with papery bougainvillaea vines dominating the rest. The actual flower of the evergreen plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts that can be very bright — from pink, magenta and purple to yellow, orange and red.

A source said Jusco’s horticulture team had reaped the idea during a visit to Bangalore and Mumbai, where central verge grilles on roads and highways boast the woody but wow vines. “Henceforth, different varieties of bougainvillaea, which are flowering plants native to South America’s Brazil, Peru and Argentina, will bloom at all roundabouts and on roadsides,” he said.

Till now, landscaping in the city involved shrubs and other ornamental flowers. “But, bougainvillaea is a better choice because it can grow in rain and without rain. It can grow in dry soil and is ideal for places where the climate is warm. Gradually, we will replace all grilles at roundabouts with hedges of bougainvillaea,” the source added.

Barely 10 days to go for Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata’s birth anniversary, the city is also painting itself perfect. From central verge grilles on roads and at roundabouts to footpaths and pedestrian crossings, Team Jusco is busy applying a fresh coat of colour.

“Beautification work has begun along 22 important roads in the city. Roundabouts and central verge grilles are being spruced up along Straight Mile Road bang opposite to Sir Dorabji Tata Park. Roadwork is being carried out by the road section, while landscaping and plantation is being done by our horticultural services. We hope to complete work by March 1,” an official said.

Some of the arteries that are part of this annual beautification campaign are Jubilee Road (the stretch from Sonari Aerodrome to Jubilee Park gate), C Road (MD bungalow to Tata Main Hospital gate), Road, Inner Circle Road (Bistupur), Kadma-Sonari Link Road, Kalimati Road, Nildih Road, Beldih Lake Road, Straight Mile Road (Dhatkidih to Sakchi roundabout), Sakchi Boulevard Road, Beldih Kalibari Road and Telco Road.

Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan confirmed the makeover drive and said work was being carried out on a war footing to complete the project before March 3.
