Mumbai, Feb. 19: German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz today launched the G63 AMG, a sports utility vehicle (SUV), with a price tag of around Rs 1.46 crore (ex-showroom Mumbai)
The launch is part of its plan to improve its market share in India as it takes on rivals such as BMW and Audi. It is now set to bring the hatchback A-class in both petrol and diesel versions apart from the the diesel model of the B-class later this year.
Apart from such launches, the German car maker is also focusing on increasing its footprint in the country by strengthening the dealer network and concentrating on the “cost of ownership’’.
The SUV comes with a 5.5- litre engine and it will hit the 100kmph mark in 5.4 seconds.
Eberhard Kern, managing director and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz India, said the G-Class had the essential attributes of a Mercedez-Benz that included dynamism, comfort, safety and status.
“The G-Class retains its shape, rugged design and the same mission to cope with extreme conditions. We are excited to introduce the G63 AMG for the discerning Indian customers and its cult status makes it the vehicle of choice of world leaders and celebrities alike,” he added.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the vehicle contains an illuminated stainless steel door sill panels, seats in designo leather, leather-trimmed dashboards and multi-function steering wheel as well as door centre panels in ruffled leather.
Meanwhile, the company has raised its investment to Rs 850 crore as part of its plan to expand the Pune factory.
Mercedes unveiled eight models last year, including the new M-class, C-class and C-class sport edition.
