Calcutta: Wet conditions on two adjoining pitches led to a two-hour delayed start to the Vijay Hazare trophy Bengal-Jharkhand match, at the Eden, on Monday.
Sunday’s showers, however, had no impact on the Odisha-Tripura match at the JU Salt Lake Campus ground.
According to the match officials, “wet conditions in the closing area of the pitch” led to the delay.
“We had watered two adjoining pitches not meant for this tournament on Saturday evening. They were later covered, but showers late that night and on Sunday morning led to the problem,” said CAB joint secretary Sujan Mukherjee.
Curator Prabir Mukherjee is unwell, and in his absence, Sujan is in charge of the pitch at the Eden. Moloy Banerjee is looking after the pitch at the JU Campus ground.
“When the covers were removed Monday morning, there were damp spots on those two wickets. The match officials felt that proceedings couldn’t get underway until those were completely dry… That led to the delay,” added Sujan.
The pitch meant for the Bengal-Jharkhand match though remained unaffected.
