Three held for gang rape

Feb. 18: Three persons, including the manger of a hotel-cum-lodge at Paltan Bazar were arrested today, after a girl from Tezpur lodged a complaint of gang rape.

According to police, the 18-year-old girl told them that she had come to her relative’s house in the city on Friday.

Last evening, a boy whom she knew, called her to the hotel and there she was gang raped by three persons. The boy, was absconding.

The police conducted a medical examination of the girl in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and the report was awaited.

“In her FIR, the girl complained that she was raped by three persons inside a room of the hotel and accordingly we arrested the three. Once the medical report arrives, we will be able to tell whether she was raped or not,” a source at Paltan Bazar police station, said.

The police registered a case 113/2013 and booked the three arrested persons under Section 376 (2) (g) IPC, which pertains to gang rape and may invite imprisonment for a term, which shall not be less than 10 years and may extend up to life and a fine.

The police said they were talking to the girl to find out how she reached the hotel.

“The girl told us that she was called to the hotel by a boy whom she knew, but we will have to investigate the matter further to get to the truth. We are trying to verify the visitor register of the hotel to identity the boy who is absconding. We are taking the case very seriously,” the source said.

Senior police officials, including L.R. Bishnoi, inspector-general of police (central western range), visited Paltan Bazar police station in the evening to take stock of the investigation.

The source said the police put in extra effort in the case, keeping in mind the criticism they faced during the GS Road molestation episode last year, and the recent Delhi gang rape.
