Nagaon, Feb. 18: Altogether 176 higher secondary students of Assam’s Dhemaji district appeared in the annual entrance test for district administration’s yearlong career coaching at Dhemaji study centre yesterday.
According to local administration records, altogether 196 students who will appear in the upcoming higher secondary first year exam applied for the coaching, of whom 176 students appeared in the test yesterday.
The administration will select 50 candidates who will then be provided coaching for different state-level and national tests in which they can appear after completion of their higher secondary course.
Dhemaji deputy commissioner M.S. Manivannan said all possible steps were taken to ensure quality training, including recruitment of resource persons from outside the state to provide more useful inputs to the students regarding national tests.
“The current (second) batch will appear for a passing-out test in April. The third batch, for which the entrance test was conducted yesterday, will start classes after that. The students will attend the coaching classes in tandem with their HS second year classes in their respective schools,” he said.
Career coaching classes in the study centre were started with 50 students in 2011. Five students of the centre have since been selected in a national-level entrance test last year.
The study centre in the heart of the town was a Rs 5-crore project of the state government that was established in memory of the 13 people (including 11 children) who were killed in the Augsut 15, 2004, Ulfa bomb blast.
Manivannan said Dispur had announced Rs 1 lakh financial assistance to the centre and Oil India Limited had recently given its consent to help upgrade it. “Our infrastructure is fine. The money received as assistance can be spent on teacher remunerations. We have a plan to upgrade the existing library and this can be done if some more assistance comes along,” he said.
Till now, teachers from local colleges and higher secondary schools are taking classes in the centre free of cost.
