Shillong, Feb. 18: Veteran legislator Hopingstone Lyngdoh apparently became a target in the ongoing race to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly when a stone was hurled at a camp where he was visiting.
Official sources said the incident occurred around 7am at the PWD inspection bungalow in Nongstoin, district headquarters of West Khasi Hills.
“A stone was hurled at the inspection bungalow where Lyngdoh was staying and the window panes were broken,” the source said.
However, the HSPDP leader, who will be seeking re-election for the eighth time from Nongstoin constituency, was not hurt in the incident.
The incident sparked panic in the bungalow as people who were present there mistook the sound of smashing window panes for gunshots.
The police launched an investigation to detect those who were behind the incident. “We have just learned that this morning there were attempts to cause physical injury or maim or even take the life of Hopingstone Lyngdoh, the seniormost politician of the state. The attempt is strongly condemned,” Indigenous Biodiversity and Social Welfare Organisation senior adviser Rev. P.B.M. Basaiawmoit said.
He also said the group had asked for extra vigilance and security for Lyngdoh.and the whole constituency and of other sensitive constituencies as the organisation is campaigning against the use of money and muscle power.
Rev. Basaiawmoit urged the authorities to accordingly act and quell such illegal, immoral and unethical activities during elections.
In the February 23 polls, Lyngdoh, among others, is contesting against his former colleague Advisor Pariong from the Congress.
