Bengal go past Delhi

Calcutta: Bengal edged past Delhi 1-0 in a Group A Qualifying Round I match of the Santosh Trophy, in Kochi, on Sunday.

The all-important goal had eluded Bengal although they called the shots for a better part of the game. However, six minutes before regulation time, striker Nabin Hela tapped home a centre from substitute Francis Xavier to seal the issue for Bengal.

Captain Dipendu Biswas feels there are still some areas that require a brush up. He also lauded the efforts of young Nabin.

“His greatest advantage is his height. He will gradually get better with more and more matches,” Dipendu said from Kochi.

He added: “There’s always a sense of relief when you win your first game. We didn’t have enough time to practice ahead of the tournament because of unavailability of ground.

“Besides, most of us haven’t played together as a team, which also is a significant factor in a competition that counts.”
