Jewellery shop looted

Alipurduar, Feb. 17: A jewellery shop near here was broken into last night and robbers fled with cash and ornaments worth around Rs 25 lakh.

The shop along the main road of Alipurduar town was shut at 8pm yesterday like any other day.

Police sources said the robbers broke the locks of the iron shutters and an iron gate. Once inside, they broke open two vaults and took out cash and ornaments. The incident came to light at 9am when owner Shaktim Karmakar opened the shop.

His brother Raktim said: “We have suffered a loss of at least Rs 25 lakh. My brother fell ill after finding out about the robbery. He has been taken to a doctor. It was our mistake that we didn’t set up CCTVs. If there was police patrolling, this would not have happened. It seems the robbers were inside for a couple of hours. In the past six months at least five shops have been looted here. We have filed a police complaint.”

Additional superintendent of police, Alipurduar, Akash Magharia, said: “I have asked the officers to give me the names of those who were on duty last night. I will take action against them.”
