Three hurt in Wokha explosion

- violence in Tripura, naGaland

Kohima, Feb. 17: Three persons were injured when suspected militants hurled a bomb at the residence of NCP candidate NSN Lotha, in Wokha town early today.

But officials gave contradicting versions of incident.

According to Lotha, a powerful bomb exploded at his residence around 3.30am and seriously injured Sorenthung from Okhe village, Bilamo Lotha from Koio village and Myingthung from Yimkha village. All are in their twenties.

But Wokha deputy commissioner R. Rysan said it was not a bomb but a firecracker, which somebody threw at Lotha’s residence and the you-ths were injured while trying to flee in the confusion. Rysan quoted from the report of Wokha’s SP.

However, the NCP candidate from Tyui constituency said a powerful bomb exploded on the roof of his house. It could not be a grenade because the explosion was huge, Lotha added.

The explosion occurred just when he was about to reach home. The injured have been hospitalised. Lotha is up against Congress candidate Yangkithung Lotha and BJP candidate T.A. Ngullie.

Rysan said he had no reports of militants being involved in the election process in Wokha. But sources said militants are active in some pockets of the district.

Chief minister Neiphiu Rio visited his Northern Angami-II constituency for the first time today. He addressed a public meeting at Zhadima village. Rio is pitted against a former truck handyman Kevise Sogotsu of the Congress.
