Jorhat, Feb. 16: The Bordumsa police station in Margherita sub-division of Tinsukia district bordering Arunachal Pradesh was today gheraoed by persons of a particular community.
The people were protesting against police inaction in arresting culprits, including a police constable allegedly involved in beating up minor boys last evening in Madhavpur area of the sub-division.
The officer-in-charge of Bordumsa police station said Madhab Dutta, the accused constable, who had allegedly been involved in beating up of students of the community, had been transferred back to the police headquarters in Guwahati on the orders of the Tinsukia superintendent of police. Two others have been picked up in connection with the incident while another accused is absconding.
The police said on Saraswati Puja yesterday, the boys, all minors from Madhavpur basti, had gone to another area about 2km away.
“They got involved in a fight with people of another community, who were organising a puja over an incident of eve-teasing,” the police said.
Dutta, who was in civil clothes, tried to intervene and allegedly beat up some boys of Madhavpur basti.
Police said the protest today was mostly by the boys’ mothers. “Among the protesters were many women whose hooch outlets had been destroyed by the police prior to declaration of the panchayat poll results,” a police official said. The police said the boys were given preliminary treatment at Kathalgurie mini-primary health centre and four of them were treated at Margherita civil hospital today. “Two boys, both minors, have been picked up in connection with the case but another person, Raju Kalita, who has a police record, is absconding,” he said.
